Printer-friendly VersionHaving a part of your body pierced is a very unique and personal experience. Like the saying, “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure” it is also true that “one person’s pain is another person’s pleasure.” Furthermore, every piercing experience that you have will vary, depending on the body part, your state of mind and mood at the time, the piercer and the setting of the shop where you are getting pierced, and your level of piercing comfort.
People get pierced for a number of different reasons. Some do it for aesthetic or fashion purposes. Some do it because they enjoy the intensity of the moment. Some people get pierced as part of a group or collective experience, and some do it to stimulate or enhance physical sensation. Regardless of whether you want to be pierced for these or any other reason, once you decide a piercing is for you, you are ready to make the next step to the piercing shop.
To the newcomer, a body piercing or Tattoo shop may be a bit intimidating at first. But once you have been in one a couple of times, you start to realize that they are kind of fun. So when you’re ready, find a shop that you think suits you, and pay them a visit. You’ll meet your piercer, they will make sure that you are of age, and not uncontrollably intoxicated, then they will take you into a sanitary piercing booth. Sanitation is a relative description—obviously getting pierced does not require the same precautions as open-heart surgery, but you should make sure that you are comfortable with the level of cleanliness in the piercing booth. Most piercers are extremely meticulous when it comes to sanitation, and the first thing they will do is pre-sterilize their booth if they have not done so already.
The piercer will put their gloves on, then sit you down or stand you up (depending on the piercing and his/her particular piercing style), and examine the area to be pierced. Not every piercing is for everybody—especially genital piercings, which can present potential rejection or infection situations—but a knowledgeable piercer can determine right away if your body can accept a particular piercing. After examining the piercing area, the piercer will then clean the area and somehow mark the area to be pierced. Some piercers do this with a one use, disposable sterile water-based marker, and some will just do it with their eyes.
The piercer will then ready their tools on their instrument tray. All piercing instruments and jewelry should be in sealed sterile packages, which the piercer opens in front of you just before the piercing. If you do not feel that a piercer’s instruments are adequately sterile, politely request that they use ones that you see them open. If at any time during your piercing experience, you doubt the sterility of a piercer’s instruments or procedures, simply ask your piercer to explain his/her sterilization precautions.
Once your piercer has removed the instruments from the sterilization pouches, they will then be sure you are ready, and begin aligning their needle. Some piercers clamp the piercing area with a rubber band wrapped around piercing pliers called forceps, and some just use their hands and maybe a cork on the exit side of the piercing. Again, this depends on the personal style and preferences of your piercer—there is no right or wrong method, some piercers use the forceps to more accurately align and guide the needle, while some feel that without forceps they have greater control and dexterity. When the needle is in line, the piercer will make sure that you are ready for a final time, and then they will slide the needle right through.
Most piercings last for only a moment—the most anxious part of your experience will be the few minutes it takes your piercer to set up. But after a quick prick, before you know it, your piercer will be inserting your new starter jewelry. Most oral, facial, and body piercings take only a moment and don’t hurt that much at all, but if you are getting a unique surface piercing or a larger spanning genital piercing, expect the actual piercing to take a little longer, and feel more intense. This is understandable, though, as the more sensitive the area of your body, the more sensitive it will be while being pierced.
After the needle is in you, and your wait is over, your piercer will insert one end of your starter jewelry into the back of the needle, and in one continuous motion, slide the needle all the way through and leave the jewelry in the piercing. Piercers prefer stainless steel captive bead rings or stainless steel barbells as starter jewelry, as these will be the easiest to clean and the least prone to infection or adverse reaction. After your jewelry is in place, your piercer will either clip in or screw on the ball at the end of the jewelry, and you are almost ready to face the world with your new piercing. Lastly, your piercer will make a final examination of your piercing, clean your piercing one last time, then instruct you on proper cleaning and aftercare procedures.
In the days subsequent to your piercing, you will notice that the pierced area is a little sore, and may be swollen or slightly black and blue for a few days to a few weeks. This is normal and to be expected. Over time, as your piercing heals and strengthens, it will become a more innate and comfortable part of your body. After a few weeks to a few months (depending on the piercing) your piercing will be fully healed, and you will be ready to upgrade your style from starter jewelry to something a little more personal (See Tribalectic Body Jewelry and Accessories). If you have any questions or concerns regarding your new piercing, always feel comfortable asking your piercer, or refer to the Tribalectic Healing and Aftercare pages for general information.

I know this is a kind of old
Posted on June 18, 2011, 12:20 pmI know this is a kind of old thread but just wanted to say, I have had 2x male genital piercings including p.a. both nipples, tongue and tongue web, 2 x helix, rook, eyebrow and a hand web piercing. I decided to have a three hole spiral cartiledge piercing this week and i've got to say it was far and away the most painful piercing i've ever had. It may be because the spiral is 1.6mm but holy c**p it hurt. I would give it a 9 out of ten! However, it was really worth it. Three days later and the swelling has gone down and it only hurts if I touch it. (which I generally dont). I know a lot of people who have a spiral have the piercings done one at a time and then add the spiral at a later date but I just aint got the patience for that. Imho.... If you can bear it it's the best piercing you can get.

Posted on September 10, 2011, 8:32 pmI've been thinking about getting my nose pierced. I've done my lobe and cartilage, but this would be my first 'real' piercing. How bad does it hurt? I've heard mixed reviews.. My pain tolerance is pretty good.

I have 4 piercings in each
Posted on September 10, 2011, 8:28 pmI have 4 piercings in each ear, up the normal curve. Then I had my right Cartlige done w/ a stud last June & it still hurts when I lay on it,; However my naval piercing was done over 7 yrs ago, I love my barbell
on Thursday this week I got an industrial slanted cartilage piercing done on my left ear & besides a little blood, and it's only been a few days, I love it! I have 8 tattoos, and really none of them hurt ... But I think it's a personal level of pain to each individual, It is so addicting & I cam see why body modification of any type is an art. I enjoy it, I have 5 kids so I try not to go too overboard with it, lol... I'm thinking of another piercing... Not sure where. I'm 31 & when I was 14 I had my lip & both eyebrows done... Went in USMC at 18 so I moved to ink but now that I'm a civilian I enjoy freely expressing myself. My back & wrist ink are my favs;-) and my new industrial slant piercing in my left ear!!! Like I said it's only 2 days old & I've had a long wait for it. The pain was quick, it's just the healing not at all like my ink!!!

I'm sorry, but I don't have a nose piercing, so I can't answer your question. But I CAN say that ALL piercings, no matter what the pain level, are over ALMOST INSTANTLY. So, I'm sure you can handle it.
We have lots of experieces here for you to read, unfortunately, the people who read this article are mostly other newbies like you, looking for info. Hi Q4J, The pain for
Posted on September 11, 2011, 6:11 amHi Q4J,
The pain for nostril piercings really seem to differ from person to person. My nostrils were more painful than most of my cartilage piercings, where my boyfriend said his (regular) nostrils were painless. Most people I've talked to say that their nostril was one of the least painful piercings they have have gotten.
Even if it does end up hurting, the pain only lasts for a second and it's done - then you're left with a pretty piece of jewelry

Just like Joann & Trish said
Posted on September 11, 2011, 10:27 amJust like Joann & Trish said above; pain is different for everyone. My daughter said her nose piercing hurt worse than the lip or industrial but others say differently.
My nipples hurt more than any other piercing I've had but the pain is over quickly and you have a nice new shiney to show for it.
Life is short; enjoy your pain.

I think pain was quick on my nose but I didn't keep it for long (parents lol) but I wish u luck! I enjoy the pain, so I think it's a mental attitude about the anticipation before the piercing;-) ...& everyone heals differently I believe!

Hi everybody! So far, I only
Posted on October 8, 2011, 12:47 amHi everybody! So far, I only have my ear lobes pierced and my right cartilage. Ithis week my friend is piercing my belly button for me, but she's also a professional. At the end of my cheerleading season, I'm getting my industrial (second cartilage) and connecting it as a rod. I'm twelve, by the way.
these are all of the piercings I want for now! I can definitely agree with the chart above, cartilage is very painful! All of my friends say their navel wasn't very bad at all, so I think I'll be fine. I got my ears pierced at such a young age that I don't even remember pain! Haha.

Posted on November 8, 2011, 9:33 pmamberlovesherpiercings - I don't have my monroe pierced, but do have my cheeks & labret pierced. Oral piercings don't hurt much at all (in my experience), and they heal a lot faster than a navel. If you want it bad enough, the second of pain will be worth it.

I got my navel pierced last
Posted on January 16, 2012, 11:32 pmI got my navel pierced last year and the only time it ever hurt was when I would run my hand over it in the shower.
You shouldn't tell people not to get it.. I honestly think that it was your mistake for going there in the first place. I got mine done and it came out perfect. It all depends on who you go to..
If you're going to get your navel pierced, ask around and see if any one has had theirs pierced and if so go where they went.

Although this probably isn't
Posted on March 13, 2012, 11:57 pmAlthough this probably isn't the answer you want to hear, hip piercings would more than likely reject if you were to get them - especially if you did them yourself. At 15 your body has some growing to do, which will not help a surface piercing (or even microdermals) in that area heal.

Between myself and my
Posted on June 4, 2012, 6:15 pmBetween myself and my boyfriend, we 25 piercings, I have 12, he has 13.
We did a scale of least painful to most painful, here it is:
1. Eyebrow/Navel
2. Earlobe (multiple)
3. Tongue
4. Lip/Labret
5. Male Nipple
6. Cartilage (multiple)
7. Nostril
And then plugs are painful, but less painful then cartilage, nipple or nostril.
Hope that helps

I have had a few piercings
Posted on July 19, 2012, 10:04 amI have had a few piercings in my life, but I'd have to say the most painful piercing I've ever received is the cartilage on my ear was by far the most painful. It was pure agony. I needed to take medication to keep the pain down. But, I absolutely love it an I find it was completely worth it. It just depends on how badly you want something I guess. If you want it get it. But try not to go crazy unless you're sure it's what you want. But ALWAYS use needles, it's just safer, and way more sanitary. Be smart about it and the piercing will be just fine. Cartilage pain will last for an extended period of time depending on how you take care of it. Hope that helps someone out there!

Ahhhh... let me tell
Posted on December 25, 2012, 11:23 amAhhhh... let me tell everyone my experience! I am a big chicken by nature and decided to buy some topical cream that claims numbness. What not a better place to try out this product than on my clitoris. Mine is so sensative that trying to conduct the "q-tip test" myself was unbearable so I bought a product called "super numb". It say 1-2 hrs and after 1 hr, I was becoming skeptical, however, about 1.5hrs into the experiment, I check my numbness factor with a sterile prepackaged needle, and WOW, I definitely couldn't feel ANYTHING- ANYTHING... Directions do say that you have to keep the area blobbed with the cream and keep a plastic wrap on it until numb- I cut a medical type glove in half, using the inside, and it worked great while I watched tv. Seriously, no BS. Anyway, the procedure took 10 secs, I was pierced and very happy with the results. I ordered the Super Numb from Amazon and was promised 1 tube, but received 3. I think I paid 15.+shipping for the cream and now I have enough to do both of my nipples and a bunch more if I want. Now, granted, after the piercing, there is mild swelling, I suppose that I could have put some ice on it, but hey, it didn't hurt. Caution: As soon as you take the plastic off of the treatment area, the feeling will come back in about 15-20 min, more than ample time to finish it up.. I love my new piercing! I had my belly button pierced a long time ago and it hurt like hell. The needle had a time getting thru some scar tissue.

I have had my tongue pierced
Posted on January 3, 2013, 3:51 amI have had my tongue pierced twice. The first time it was awesome. It closed up in about 3 hours when I forgot to put it back in after cleaning my jewlery. I got it repierced into the scar tissue and it maybe felt about a tad more painful than the first time. I am gonna get it repierced at third time. My actual ears getting pierced hurt WAY worse. The soreness on the second day is really the only painful thing.
GET IT! You will love it!

Posted on February 6, 2013, 7:25 pmSo I've seen a ton of comments about how tongue piercings do not hurt too bad, but I'm looking into venom bites, or two tongue piercings placed horizontally.
The piercings I have gotten so far are four lobes in my left ear, two on my right, one cartilage in each, my lip, my nostril, and my nipples. I also have six tattoos. So I'm pretty good with pain.
I'd love opinions on how much it would hurt to get them done. I really like how they look.
Another thing I'd like to know that I haven't seen a lot about on here is the healing time for tongue piercings, and if it would be different for two. How bad does it hurt afterwards and how long will it be before I can eat normally again?
Any information is helpful. Thanks.

@Marikalou93: You would
Posted on February 6, 2013, 10:55 pm@Marikalou93: You would probably get more replies if you made a post in the forums asking about these.
That said, I have not had venom piercings (the two off center tongue piercings is what you mean, correct?) although I have had 3 center tongue piercings + had it split twice so I know quite a bit about tongue modifications. The healing time for venoms would be the same as your basic tongue piercing (so pretty quick, lol). I really wouldn't worry about the pain, you have other more painful piercings, you will be fine. The swelling sucks, although it goes away in roughly 3-7 days. Day 3 was always the worst for me. Taking 2 ibuprofen every 4 hours, ice and cold foods, and sleeping with your head elevated will help with that.
