Soooooo... I haven't seriously undergone piercing in almost six years. I went through a big piercing phase in my teens and over the course of three years completed 23 piercings. I didn't have much left that I wanted to get done. One thing I always LOVED but never had the balls to do was get a septum piercing. I thought they looked groovy as all hell but would look terrible on me due to the, um, interesting topography of my nose. I'm not sure what struck me almost six years later, a few piercings less but still quite holey, to get my septum pierced on a whim. I talked with a piercer and found out I could pierce my septum and wear 18g jewelry, which excited me as I thought i'd have to stick with a larger gauge that's not as discreet. I also found out that a septum piercing does not actually go through cartilage, but rather membrane, which works to my advantage because I tend to keloid badly when piercing cartilage. Anyway, I decided to go through with it, finally. The piercing didn't hurt in the least, isn't sore at all, and I absolutely love it. Right now I have a retainer in a flipped up while it heals (as I can't wear it to work), and I can't wait until a few months have passed and I can start switching jewelry around and really playing with it. Almost a decade of debate and turns out there was nothing to be afraid of. It wasn't painful, and it doesn't look half bad. In fact, I quite love my little addition and the returned interest in piercing it's given me.
