A couple months ago I discovered a new kind of micro-dermal made by the company Biologix. These dermals are an industrial strength bio-plastic instead of metal. I'd always wanted to get some dermals, but I was very hesitant about having a piece of metal "permanently" under my skin since I tend to frequent the hospital.

A month ago I was heading down to NYC and had a friend try to find a good piercer who would order the dermals I wanted. He succeeded in finding a place, but the dermals didn't arrive on time. Well, I made another trip to NYC and this time they did have my dermals in. I scheduled and appointment for 4 and ended up late because my male friend is more of a good than I am and took FOREVER to get ready.

When I arrived at the parlor (Red Rocket Tattoo & Piercing), I was a little put off by the location and outside appearance, it looked just like any other cheap and unsanitary piercing parlor in NYC. After walking inside though, I was reassured that it was a good place. It had a comfortable atmosphere and everything was clean and sterilized.

My piercer was Alex, he told me honestly that he'd never worked with the biologix dermals, but that he had researched them intensely before deciding to order them. Because of the fact I was essentially a guinea pig to him for this dermal type, he offered a good discount, which to me still cost quite a lot, but I'll take what I can get.

Alex had me fill out the paper work and copied my license, talked about after care, questions, whole nine yards. He then had the shop owner mark me though (after the area was cleaned), not sure exactly why, but I am happy that if he felt he couldn't get them straight that he asked for help instead of just going on ahead. It took three markings before I was happy with the placement. Once I accepted the placement he had me lay down and proceeded to put on new gloves.

The dermal punch wasn't all that bad, it actually didn't even hurt as much as a normal piercing, the tapering I honestly didn't even feel, but putting the dermal in....ow. My friend was with me the whole time holding my hand though, that was nice.

The first dermal in had a healing post instead of a healing cap because I had thought it would be better. After the first one though, Alex really felt a healing cap would be better and I didn't really care, so I agreed to switch to small healing caps. The second dermal went smoothly until it broke. Yes, you read that right, the dermal broke. The threading snapped completely off the base. This was a little nerve wracking to say the least...but I decided to go on ahead. The next two dermals were totally fine.

So then I had two dermals with caps and one with a healing post, the original plan after I decided to switch was just take the post off and put on a cap, well, for some reason or another, I don't quite understand why, that's not what happened. Alex said the piercing had sunk too much and that he had to take it out, then I went through an IMMENSE amount of pain. After taking one out I was really dreading him putting a new one in, but honestly he had in popped in before I even knew. Taking it out had stretched the hole a pretty decent amount so that putting a new one in was literally painless. He did use a bigger healing cap on the bottom one since he worried it would sink in if he used the small ones like for my other 2.

Finally, I was done. I was actually kinda cold after the whole thing and I forgot that he wanted to bandage the dermals down, so I ended up getting into a fight with my shirt since I started putting it on and then trying to take it off at the same time. The dermals got bandaged down, I paid, and I am very happy I went through with it. Alex was a great piercer, I paid him to beat me up and beat me up he did xD. I would definitely recommend others to Red Rocket Tattoo and Piercing in Manhattan. As for the Biologix dermals, 4/5 were fine. So maybe one just came from a bad batch.
