Pierced on May 17, 2008 at Tattoo Paradise in Shreveport LA by Maxx.
Two months ago, I received my first body piercing at 27 years old. It was a Prince Albert. After healing and using it (wink wink), I wanted more. I always envied those who went through with an apadravya. I knew I couldn’t do it, but I wanted one. I did some research, and learned that I, having a PA, already had half of an apadravya! All I needed was a reverse PA.
I did some more research online to verify this could be done and made sense. I called my original PA piercer (Skinworks Tattoo, Bossier City LA). He wasn’t there, but the guy I talked to didn’t know if he had ever done a reverse PA. Not very encouraging! I called around all the local tattoo/piercing shops…no one even did the reverse PA.
The final shop I called was Tattoo Paradise (www.tattooparadise.biz) and I spoke to Harvey, a very experienced artist it turns out. I told him what I want to do: a reverse PA, lined up w/ my PA, so it forms an apadravya. He asked Maxx, the piercer, if he can do it: Yes!
My wife and I went there the next day. I meet Maxx; I couldn’t miss his “Maxx sucks” t-shirt, which said “Don’t get tattooed by Maxx” on the back. He examined my PA and said it would be “tricky, but we can do it”. He starts to prep me for the piercing and I notice he’s cleaning my glans lower than I’ve seen apadravyas exit, so I ask him what’s up. He says that’s the only way he pierces apadravyas, which it turns out is actually a shaft apadravya. He asks me if it’s ok to proceed. I think about it, take a deep breath. Yes, go ahead…I know how rare the shaft apa is so I take the plunge.
The piercing: He uses an 8 gauge needle to start the piercing via my existing 12g PA hole. Since it is not a deep PA, the first half or so of the PA hole probably went undisturbed, but the new angle broke through and started a new hole just prior to the urethra. The pain was much, much greater than my PA. The brief pause at the urethra gave me false hope, as he pushed w/ great force into my glans/shaft. At the risk of discouraging my readers’ interest in this piercing, the pain was HORRIFIC. I screamed…loudly. I cursed…loudly. I sweated through my shirt and shorts, only to then feel shivers (a mini little shock, I bet).
The piercing is done….or so I thought! He still had to insert the barbell. Ok, I thought. I didn’t even feel the PA jewelry go in last time, so this’ll be vanilla. Nope! It was almost as painful as the piercing itself. But, NOW it’s done.
Healing: A work in progress. As I type this, it’s been 36 hours. I am quite surprised at the healing thus far. I have my PA experience as a baseline for comparison. The shaft apa has had minimal bleeding and NO pain when walking/sitting/moving. The only time I really know it’s there is in the morning with morning wood.
I do sea salt soaks 2-3x a day, and apply Dial anti-bacterial foaming soap around the piercing in the shower 1-2x per day.
I will take photos throughout the healing process. I feel I have a responsibility to document my experience, given the lack of information online about the shaft apadravya.
Healing, Day 4: some slight swelling on the upper side, near the ball, also w/ a bit of redness. Nothing major. I’ll continue w/ my SSS and perhaps see about getting a longer barbell.
